Some Thoughts on International Arbitration in Japan and Elsewhere Professor Sakamoto's presentation will offer his observations on the latest developments in international arbitration within and outside OF Japan. In so doing, he will assess whether and (if so) to what extent Japan might accommodate modern Western-style arbitration practices and hybrid forms of dispute resolution (such as med-arb and arb-med-arb). Professor Sakamoto has been teaching at the Nihon University College of Law since 2003 on the US legal system from a Japanese perspective. His areas of research include Constitutional Law, Contracts, Torts, Civil Procedure, and International Dispute Resolution. In 2014 Professor Sakamoto was a Visiting Scholar at Pennsylvania State University Law School. In 2011 he taught a ...
Public outcry is growing in the US at emergency services' seeming policy of standing by while houses burn down and people drown, if services have not been previously paid for. A spate of real-life incidents has sparked concern over what kind of society America is becoming. The recent series of shocking accidents forced homeowners in one of the counties to watch as their houses and possessions burned to the ground. And the firefighters were right there watching, as well. All because the owners didn't pay the US$75 "fire subscription fee", known as the "pay for spray" charge. In the US, fire policy varies from state to state, and from county to county. RT on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/RTnews RT on Twitter: http://twitter.com/RT_com

Fukushima Response Campaign co-founder John Bertucci summarizes the current status of nuclear energy and attorney Charles Bonner explains what he hopes to achieve with his class action litigation on behalf of military personnel harmed by exposure to Fukushima fallout during an aid mission. The suit targets the plant operator and its manufacturers. This is part 5 of a 5-part series based on, 'Taking Nuclear to Court in Japan, Korea and the USA,' a program co-sponsored by Project Censored, Fukushima Response, EON, and Sonoma Peace and Justice in Rohnert Park, CA on July 17, 2015. Other speakers are part of a delegation of South Korean and Japanese activists on a West Coast tour. Lee Jin Seop talks about his wife’s case and other lawsuits that have been filed in S. Mr. Tony Marano has published numerous videos on Japan, many of them sympathetic to the right wing element in Japan, which believes Japan's actions in World War II were noble. He also posted a video called, "No foreigners allowed" signs in Japan," concerning non-Japanese (people's) feelings about this discrimination (regarding these signs, posted in front of Japanese business establishments) and a lawsuit that was initiated over this discrimination. Mr. Marano suggests Americans are excessively litigous, while the Japanese are not. I take exception to this as I was a defendant in a frivolous lawsuit in Japan brought on by my visa sponsor and employer. I felt I had no choice but to countersue (even though I couldn't afford a lawyer at first). After almost a year and a half of litigatio...

The Saga Tennou Matsuri (Emperor Saga Festival) is a local summer festival held in late August in the Kyoto suburb of Umezu. It's easily accessible by train or bus from central Kyoto. This was my last Japanese summer festival for 2017 and a great cultural experience. The standout parts of this festival are the boys' sumo competition and Umezu Rokusai Nenbutsu which is a traditional dance and music performance held at 7pm. The boys' sumo takes place first thing in the morning, so I missed that part, unfortunately. Several foreigners came to the festival also to experience what a Japanese summer festival and traditional dances are like, which was great to see. Timestamps: Jump straight to the Rokusai Nenbutsu at 1:20. Some more information about the festival is available here (you will n...

Kyoto, Japan, has long been considered one of the country’s most beautiful cities. Once the capital of the nation, Kyoto is now an ultra-modern haven that retains a great deal of its ancient charm. To see some of this long-established glamour, make your way to Kyoto Tower. Just two miles east of the tower is Gion, an entertainment quarter and home to many of Kyoto’s famous geishas. As you walk east through Gion, you’ll find even more old architecture, including several Ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns. Many date back to the Edo period, which ranged from 1603 to 1868. During your Kyoto tour, take a rickshaw ride to the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka districts, where cars are prohibited and traditional teahouses and temples adorn the nearby landscape. Kyoto is known as “The City of Ten Th...
